Heavy rain is on the way! 🌧️ A storm system will impact the Lower Mainland over the next 48 hours, bringing 50–130+mm of rain and higher streamflows in local rivers.

While major flooding isn’t expected, localized flooding, rising river levels, and hazardous driving conditions are possible. Please take precautions and stay alert.

👷‍♂️ City crews are out inspecting drainage systems, culverts, and pump stations, and are ready to respond as needed.

✅ How you can prepare:
• Clear leaves & debris from gutters and drains.
• Protect flood-prone areas around your home.
• Review your emergency plan & supplies.
• Stay clear of rivers, creeks & unstable banks.
• Keep kids & pets safe and nearby.
• Check in on neighbours who may need help.

A little throwback this Thursday!
Before the construction of the Alouette Dam in 1926, Alouette Lake was significantly smaller than the expansive reservoir we see today. Originally, the lake was approximately 2 kilometers in length and much shallower. The dam raised the water level by about 15 meters (50 feet), transforming the lake into a 16 kilometer long reservoir. The primary purpose of the dam was to divert water from the Alouette River to the Stave River watershed for hydroelectric power generation. This diversion was achieved through a 1 kilometer long tunnel beneath Mount Crickmer, which channels water from Alouette Lake to the Stave Lake Reservoir, still in operation today.

Yesterday, the ARMS team had the pleasure of touring the Kwikwetlem Hatchery with manager Rodney Lee and ex-DFO senior biologist Matt Foy. We explored the hatchery facilities and visited the Coquitlam Dam trap and spawning channels to learn more about this operation.

The Kwikwetlem Hatchery is a purpose-built sockeye facility dedicated to restoring a self-sustaining Sockeye Salmon run in the Coquitlam River. Rodney guided our Directors and Executive Director through the post-contact history of the Coquitlam Watershed, sharing insight into the dam’s impacts and ongoing restoration efforts.

A huge thank-you to Rodney and Matt for an informative and inspiring day. A great experience for the ARMS team! 💙

Even small reductions in night lighting can make a big difference for local ecosystems! 🦉🦇
💡 Here’s how you can help:
- Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights at night.
- Use motion sensors or timers instead of leaving lights on all evening.
- Choose warm coloured bulbs that are less harmful to wildlife.
- Angle lights downward to minimize skyglow.

It’s salmon season in the Alouette, and you can be sure to spot returning spawners in the local waterways!
Learning to tell the difference between species helps us track runs, protect habitats, and celebrate returning Pacific salmon.

Quick ID tips: Can you guess what species is in the picture?
🔸 Chum: bold “tiger stripes” and a dark mouth with black gums
🔸 Sockeye: red body and green head with a white mouth
🔸 Coho: dark back with a light jawline and a few tail spots
🔸 Chinook: large, with a black mouth and spotted tail
🔸 Pink: small, humped back and white mouth, black gums
