❄️ Cold Plunges & Salmon Fry: Why Timing and L ❄️ Cold Plunges & Salmon Fry: Why Timing and Location Matter 🐟
Late winter and early spring are a critical time for salmon fry as they emerge and begin rearing in rivers and streams. These tiny fish rely on shallow, calm edges for shelter, the same areas often used for cold plunges.
Entering the river can accidentally disturb fry, stir up sediment, and flush them from hiding, increasing stress and exposure to predators during a very vulnerable life stage.
If you enjoy cold plunging, please choose locations away from salmon-bearing streams or use designated recreation areas. Giving rivers space during this important season helps ensure salmon have the best chance to survive and thrive. Thank you for helping protect the Alouette River and its wildlife 💚🐟
While field work slows down, ARMS staff are busy p While field work slows down, ARMS staff are busy planning, monitoring, and preparing for the year ahead at the Geoff Clayton Rivers Heritage Centre. Restoration, education, and stewardship all start with thoughtful preparation. As we head into 2026, ARMS remains committed to protecting and restoring the Alouette River watershed.
If you’ve ever spotted salmon bones scattered al If you’ve ever spotted salmon bones scattered along riverbanks or deep in the forest, you’re witnessing a powerful natural process at work. Predators such as bears, eagles, otters, and wolves often carry salmon away from the river to safer feeding spots. After they’ve eaten, the remains are left behind, where they continue to play an important role.
As the bones decompose, they release marine nutrients into the soil, fertilizing plants, supporting insects, and strengthening the entire forest ecosystem. In turn, these healthy forests help shade streams, stabilize riverbanks, and create better habitat for future salmon generations.
Salmon don’t just sustain life in the river, they feed the forest too. Seeing their remains is a sign of a connected, thriving ecosystem. 🌊🐟🌲
New Year brings new ways to care for the river 🌱
A new year is the perfect time to renew our commitment to the watershed. Small actions like staying up to date with current fishing regulations, keeping on trails and dogs leashed near the river, as well as packing out whatever we pack in, helps protect sensitive habitats year-round. Stewardship starts with everyday choices.
