Adopt-A-Block clean up at Garibaldi Secondary Scho Adopt-A-Block clean up at Garibaldi Secondary School 🗑️

Tonight, we had 4 awesome volunteers join us at Garibaldi Secondary School to clean up the parking lot and school grounds, and wow, did we make an impact! 💪✨

Together, we collected 2 large bags of litter, including food waste, fast food containers, cigarette butts, vapes, and countless food wrappers. It’s a reminder of how much waste can build up in everyday spaces, and how a small group of people can make a big difference. 🗑️❤️

Huge thanks to our volunteers for showing up and helping keep our community clean!

Salmon Myth-Busting! 🐟 MYTH: "All salmon die a Salmon Myth-Busting! 🐟

MYTH: "All salmon die after they spawn."
TRUTH: While many Pacific salmon species (like Sockeye and Chinook) do die after spawning, not all salmon follow this life cycle!

Steelhead trout, for example (a close relative of salmon), can actually survive spawning and return to the ocean, sometimes repeating the journey multiple times. This ability is called iteroparity, and it's an impressive feat!

Why does this matter? It shows how diverse and complex salmonid life cycles are and how protecting their habitats supports a wide range of species with unique survival strategies.

💡Protecting rivers, streams, and spawning grounds isn’t just about a single salmon run, it’s about supporting a whole web of life that depends on these incredible fish.
Despite rain, a last-minute location change, and e Despite rain, a last-minute location change, and even a rented-out parking lot, this weekends community cleanup was a success! ✨

We are so incredibly grateful to Nikita, a dedicated volunteer who has taken the initiative to organize and lead these community cleanups. Thanks to her energy and coordination, there was a fantastic turnout of community members, all coming together to make a difference, even when the odds were stacked against them!

A huge shoutout to everyone who showed up, and to the kind stranger who happened to be on his way to the dump and helped haul away the collected trash. A great example of community spirit and support.

We were proud to support this cleanup by providing supplies, and we’re already looking forward to seeing the next one: Sunday, May 25 at 10am at Thomas Haney High School (meet at the baseball fields).

The Adopt A Block program will also be at Garibaldi Secondary School from 6pm-7pm on Wednesday, May 14th to remove litter from around the school and streets. If you'd like to attend please send an email to communications@alouetteriver.org or sign up through the link: https://volunteersignup.org/TW4E8
Happy Mother’s Day!🌷 Just like human moms, f Happy Mother’s Day!🌷

Just like human moms, female salmon go to incredible lengths for the next generation. After a long and difficult journey upstream, female salmon lay thousands of eggs in carefully built gravel nests called redds. These mothers give life to the rivers and streams they return to. Their sacrifice ensures the survival of future salmon and the health of the entire ecosystem.

We celebrate all the strong mothers out there—human and salmon alike!
Spending time outside and learning about nature is Spending time outside and learning about nature is one of the most powerful ways to spark curiosity, creativity and care in kids.

In celebration of David Attenborough’s 99th birthday, we’re reminded how deeply his work has inspired generations to protect the natural world. His storytelling has shown us that when children connect with nature, they grow into passionate stewards of the plant.

Happy Birthday to a true environmental legend, may his work continue to inspire youth around the globe for years to come! 🎉🐟🌿🐻
