Yesterday (October 14th) was a very exciting day o Yesterday (October 14th) was a very exciting day on the Alouette! Sockeye #16 along with 4 others entered the ALLCO Hatchery fish trap, ready for sampling and transport to the Alouette Reservoir.
For those who are new here, the Alouette system has a population of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) that includes both migratory (sockeye) and resident (kokanee) species.
What’s unusual is that both species spawn at significant depths in Alouette Reservoir, rather than in shallow lakeshores or in river tributaries (like the iconic Adams River run). Deep lake spawning sockeye are very rare and there are only a few known watersheds globally! As you can see in the photo, Alouette sockeye do not get a vibrant red and green but are much darker in their spawning colors.
It’s more important than ever to restore fish passage on the Alouette system to allow these species to thrive, reconnecting them with their historic habitats, strengthening biodiversity, and ensuring the long term survival of this unique salmon population.

Each fall, dedicated volunteers head to local stre Each fall, dedicated volunteers head to local streams and rivers to conduct salmon spawner surveys, a vital part of understanding and protecting BC’s wild salmon.

By counting the number of salmon returning to spawn, if they have spawned or not, identifying their species, and recording habitat conditions, these surveys provide critical data on the health of salmon populations and the ecosystems that depend on them. This information helps guide habitat restoration, water management, and conservation planning across watersheds like the Alouette.

Spawner surveys also connect people directly with nature, reminding us how our actions upstream affect life downstream. Every data point collected contributes to the ongoing story of salmon resilience in British Columbia’s rivers.
This Thanksgiving, we’re feeling extra grateful This Thanksgiving, we’re feeling extra grateful for our amazing volunteers and stewards who care for our rivers, trails, and salmon. 🧡
Your hard work keeps our waters clean, our habitats healthy, and our communities connected. Thank you for giving your time, energy, and heart to nature. 🌊🐟
Fall skies in BC are full of wings! 🍂🦅 As sa Fall skies in BC are full of wings! 🍂🦅 As salmon return to spawn, bald eagles gather along rivers like the Harrison, Squamish, and Alouette to feast and fuel up for winter. Have you spotted any yet?
Autumn in the Alouette Watershed isn’t just beau Autumn in the Alouette Watershed isn’t just beautiful, it’s alive. 🍂 As the leaves change, salmon surge upstream, and wildlife thrives off the nutrients they bring. From eagles overhead to bears in the forest, fall fuels the entire food web. 🌲🦅🐻 Check out this beautiful image taken by Kristina Brisbin of Anderson Creek!
