If you’ve ever spotted salmon bones scattered al If you’ve ever spotted salmon bones scattered along riverbanks or deep in the forest, you’re witnessing a powerful natural process at work. Predators such as bears, eagles, otters, and wolves often carry salmon away from the river to safer feeding spots. After they’ve eaten, the remains are left behind, where they continue to play an important role.
As the bones decompose, they release marine nutrients into the soil, fertilizing plants, supporting insects, and strengthening the entire forest ecosystem. In turn, these healthy forests help shade streams, stabilize riverbanks, and create better habitat for future salmon generations.
Salmon don’t just sustain life in the river, they feed the forest too. Seeing their remains is a sign of a connected, thriving ecosystem. 🌊🐟🌲
New Year brings new ways to care for the river 🌱
A new year is the perfect time to renew our commitment to the watershed. Small actions like staying up to date with current fishing regulations, keeping on trails and dogs leashed near the river, as well as packing out whatever we pack in, helps protect sensitive habitats year-round. Stewardship starts with everyday choices.
⚠️ January: Peak Season for Wildlife Collision ⚠️ January: Peak Season for Wildlife Collisions 🦌

January is one of the most dangerous months for wildlife on the roads in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and surrounding areas. With shorter days, darkness in the morning and early evening, and winter’s limited food sources, animals like deer, coyotes, raccoons, and even smaller creatures are more likely to move near or across roadways.
Why it happens: Deer and other wildlife are often searching for food, traveling along traditional migration or territory routes, or fleeing perceived threats. Herd behavior can make things worse, when one animal bolts, others often follow, creating sudden and unpredictable crossings. Roadside vegetation, rivers, and open fields are common areas where wildlife congregates, making some stretches of road particularly high-risk.

Tips for safe travel:
- Slow down in areas with wildlife crossing signs or reduced visibility.
- Stay alert, especially during dawn and dusk.
- Use high beams when safe, but dim for oncoming traffic.
- Expect the unexpected, wildlife can appear suddenly.

By staying vigilant and driving cautiously, we can protect both wildlife and ourselves. Even a few extra seconds of attention can make a life-saving difference during this peak winter season.

Native Species Highlight: Snowberry Those bright Native Species Highlight: Snowberry
Those bright white winter berries aren’t for us, but they help sustain birds like grouse and thrushes when food is scarce. Snowberry thickets also offer winter shelter for small mammals and songbirds. A staple native shrub for year-round habitat.
