If you’ve taken a walk near the river lately, yo If you’ve taken a walk near the river lately, you may have noticed a strong smell in the air, a classic sign that salmon are beginning to decompose after completing their life cycle. While it may not be the most pleasant scent, it’s actually a powerful indicator of a healthy ecosystem.
When salmon die and break down in the forest, they release a burst of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrients are carried into the soil, absorbed by plants, and even detected in the growth rings of trees miles from the riverbank.
🌲💚
As the salmon give back to the forest, consider giving back to the work of ARMS. Your donation helps us protect the Alouette River, restore critical habitat, and provide environmental education to our community. (link in our bio)

Winter is coming… but let’s keep our rivers sa Winter is coming… but let’s keep our rivers salt-free! When winter hits, road and sidewalk salts help keep us safe, but they can take a serious toll on our rivers and aquatic life.
🧂 How salt affects our watershed:
- Chloride from road salts washes into storm drains and streams.
- High concentrations are toxic to fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants.
- Once it enters our waterways, salt doesn’t disappear it builds up year after year.
🐟 In recent years, monitoring has shown chloride levels in some areas far exceeding healthy limits, posing risks to species that call the Alouette home.
🌿 Better alternatives for homeowners:
✅ Shovel early and often to prevent ice buildup
✅ Use sand or gravel for traction
✅ Try eco-friendly deicers like calcium magnesium acetate
✅ Reduce salt use, even a little makes a big difference!
Together, we can keep our roads safe and our rivers healthy.
For this weeks throwback Thursday, as we are getti For this weeks throwback Thursday, as we are getting ready for our clean up this weekend along Kanaka way, we’re looking back at the early days of the Adopt-a-Block Program. When community members first came together to take ownership of their neighbourhoods and keep Maple Ridge beautiful.
From those very first cleanups to today’s dedicated adopters, volunteers have removed thousands of bags of litter, reported illegal dumping, and helped protect local creeks and green spaces. 🌿🗑️
Adopt-a-Block has always been about more than picking up garbage, it’s about community pride, environmental stewardship, and neighbours working together to keep Maple Ridge healthy and vibrant. Here’s to everyone who has ever rolled up their sleeves and made a difference. Your efforts continue to inspire a cleaner, greener future. 💙 Thank you!
Most Pacific salmon travel 1,000 to 3,000 km over Most Pacific salmon travel 1,000 to 3,000 km over their entire life cycle, but some travel much farther.

Typical breakdown:
Juvenile migration downstream: 20 - 200km
Ocean migration: 1,000km - 2,500km
Return migration upriver: 50 - 1,500km, depending on the watershed.

This #GivingTuesday, December 2nd, keep journeys like this possible by donating to our salmon strong campaign. Each donation directly supports projects that help salmon survive and thrive from habitat restoration, salmon monitoring and educational programs.

Eco Tip Tuesday: 🐦 Bird feeding this winter ❄ Eco Tip Tuesday: 🐦 Bird feeding this winter ❄

1. Choose the Right Food: Different birds have different needs!
Black oil sunflower seeds: loved by chickadees, finches, and nuthatches.
Suet: provides high-energy fat for woodpeckers and jays.
Cracked corn & millet: great for ground feeders like sparrows.

2. Feed Consistently: Once you start feeding, keep it up through winter!
Birds come to rely on steady food sources during cold spells when natural options are scarce.

3. Offer Fresh Water: Water can be hard to find when everything’s frozen!
Use a heated bird bath or place a shallow dish of warm water outside (refilling often).
