The ALLCO Fish Hatchery has enumerated all five pa The ALLCO Fish Hatchery has enumerated all five pacific salmon species this year! We want to hear from you on how fishing has been so far in the Alouette River? Comment below 🙂 Bonus points if you share a photo of your big catch 🎣
You’re invited to learn about fins & feathers! C You’re invited to learn about fins & feathers!
Celebrate the fall season with the return of spawning salmon to the Alouette Watershed. Each year salmon swim back from the ocean to the Alouette River and other local creeks to spawn. See the salmon and learn about their life cycle on Sunday, November 9th at the ALLCO Fish Hatchery in Maple Ridge.
Bring your family and friends and come by to learn about the five species of Pacific salmon and their lifecycle through storytelling. Understand the importance of salmon in the Alouette Watershed.
We’re excited to welcome the Northern Spotted Owl Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the recovery and conservation of one of Canada’s most endangered bird species — the Northern Spotted Owl. Their team works tirelessly to protect remaining wild owls, restore habitat, and manage a specialized breeding program that aims to increase the population here in British Columbia.
Due to size of the inside space and to not overwhelm the Owls, this event will be done by registration and will be capped at 50 attendees. If you would like to attend, please register using the link in our bio.
Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), also kn Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), also known as Spring or King Salmon, are the largest of the Pacific salmon species.
Historically, Chinook Salmon were native to the Alouette River, but their populations declined dramatically after the construction of the Alouette Dam in 1926, which blocked access to traditional spawning grounds in the upper watershed. For decades, Chinook and other salmon species were largely absent from the upper Alouette system.
The gradual return of Chinook to the Alouette is a powerful symbol of resilience and restoration. It represents decades of community effort to reconnect habitat, improve water management, and bring salmon back to their historic range.
Yesterday (October 14th) was a very exciting day o Yesterday (October 14th) was a very exciting day on the Alouette! Sockeye #16 along with 4 others entered the ALLCO Hatchery fish trap, ready for sampling and transport to the Alouette Reservoir.
For those who are new here, the Alouette system has a population of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) that includes both migratory (sockeye) and resident (kokanee) species.
What’s unusual is that both species spawn at significant depths in Alouette Reservoir, rather than in shallow lakeshores or in river tributaries (like the iconic Adams River run). Deep lake spawning sockeye are very rare and there are only a few known watersheds globally! As you can see in the photo, Alouette sockeye do not get a vibrant red and green but are much darker in their spawning colors.
It’s more important than ever to restore fish passage on the Alouette system to allow these species to thrive, reconnecting them with their historic habitats, strengthening biodiversity, and ensuring the long term survival of this unique salmon population.
